Kudos to Zack Snyder, who came from nowhere and has, already from Dawn of the Dead, proved that he is a brilliant and capable director. This movie, together with the LOTR,is the entrance to the 21st century's new epic movies. All those who will pay the ticket to see this movie, must be prepared not for a historic movie, but for a stylish battle movie. But always remember that this is a movie that is based on a graphic novel and is by no means a faithful depiction of what really happened in Thermopylae in 480 B.C. You must see it to understand how great this movie is. The anger in his eyes, the fury in his voice and the violence in his actions really reminded an ancient Greek king),but I won't ruin it for you. I could write something about the plot or the actors's outstanding performances(especially Gerard Butler's.you see, being Greek-Italian,I wanted the best from the actors.Butler gave it. I thought they were comparable,if not better,to the LOTR,go see for yourselves. All the camera work and graphics exceeded my expectations. The result? This movie was a pleasure for the eye. Just like in the Lord of the Rings, much CGI was used here. 300 doesn't apply to this category.Besides it takes the epic to the next level. And more are like to follow. Almost every epic movie that will be made today,no matter how good the story will be or how faithful will be to reality,is bound to repeat itself. We got examples from Alexander and Kingdom of Heaven. Ben Hur,Braveheart,Gladiator,Spartacus and perhaps even Troy are only some of the epic movies that gave the audience so big thrills that they cannot be repeated. But how can you make a new movie, for the audience to like, without recycling old material? Answer:You improve what old filmmakers couldn't:Graphics. After gaving us some of the greatest epic movies in the last 50 years,it was clear that filmmakers needed to take them to the next level. I'll try to write about the other books and graphic novels I've read this last month. In August alone, I read over 20 books, 19 of which were graphic novels and one of which was a non-fiction book. Over the first six months of this year, I read 3 books, one of which was technical. One of my New Year resolutions was to read more than 12 books, one for every month of the year. I've read a lot over the last month, which I am very very proud of. Luckily for me, a colleague of mine from work had it and was kind enough to lend it to me (Thanks Christian!). This last month, I experience this firsthand when I read the Watchmen and realized the similarities and differences between the graphic novel and the movie.Īt the end of the day, it's a beautiful book that I suggest you read. I've heard Harry Potter fans complain about the differences between the books and the movies. I guess everyone takes artistic liberties when adapting a book or a graphic novel to a movie. Again, this is something I feel shouldn't have been thrown out of the movie as it made the story more realistic and gave it a better message. The other biggest deviation was the fact that the 300 Spartans weren't the only men to have fought the Persians, there were other allies.
The non-linear story arc was more compelling than the linear arc, which is what I remember the movie took. The book takes a non-linear arc where we see the 300 prepare for war as we learn about how Leonidas became king and how the war started.
I don't know why but I very much prefer reading the story than watching the story, even if the movie had followed the story exactly.Ĭoming to deviations between the book and the movie, the story arc is probably the most prominent, atleast in the beginning of the book. It was also better at grabbing and holding on to my attention better than the movie. The book felt more visually appealing than the movie.
I kept comparing it to the movie, in the back of my head. Now, coming to the actual book, it was beautifully drawn and interesting to read. In the documentary Miller openly admits that he made many radical changes to the history and director Zack Snyder admits to making further changes. You would be familiar with his work if you are fan of Batman. The movie is based heavily on Frank Miller's 1998 comic book mini-series, also entitled '300'. If you are interested in comic books and graphic novels, you would've heard of Frank Miller. The movie 300 is based on the graphic novel 300, by Frank Miller.
